6.97 ctw Matched Pair – Award-Winning Tanzanian Alexandrites
Reviews
This 1.94 carat natural Alexandrite is not only a gemstone—it’s a piece of Russian gemological history. Certified by both AGL and GIA, this stone has been designated by AGL as “Classic Russia” origin—a rare and highly prestigious distinction reserved for a handful of Alexandrites that meet the highest standards of provenance, color, and clarity. In over a decade of specialization, we have never seen this label for Russian Origin Alexandrites, and even fewer with this level of optical performance.
Originally weighing just over 2 carats, this gem underwent meticulous repolishing to remove minor surface imperfections. The result is a loupe-clean, investment-grade Russian Alexandrite with exceptional face-up brilliance and near-perfect symmetry—an extreme rarity, as most Russian stones are traded in included form and still fetch premium values.
The color change is dramatic and highly saturated: Greenish Blue to Purple Pink, with a 90–100% transition noted as “Prominent to Strong” on the AGL report. This kind of alexandrite effect, in a Russian-origin stone, is exceedingly rare—and impossible to replace in today’s market.
With the Russian mines long depleted and export of verified stones now nearly nonexistent, this 1.94 ct gem stands as a collector’s opportunity. It is one of the finest small-format Russian Alexandrites we’ve handled—refined, historical, and irreplaceable.
This is likely the only one of its kind we’ll ever offer.

This remarkable 6.97 carat total weight pair of natural Oval Alexandrites represents over a decade of disciplined sourcing and expert craftsmanship. Originally acquired as two separate stones—purchased years apart—both identified as Tanzania birth, one of the few locations on Earth still producing fine Alexandrite. Though sourced independently, their uncanny similarity in tone, structure, and optical behavior made them feel like twins separated at birth. We entrusted both stones to our most accomplished cutter, who masterfully recut and aligned them—transforming what was once a 9+ carat total weight into a refined and balanced 6.97 ct pair, optimized for brilliance, proportion, and precision. The result was awarded Second Place in the AGTA Spectrum Awards (Suites & Pairs category), a rare distinction that underscores their beauty and rarity. According to AGL, both stones exhibit a Bluish Green to Purple Pink color change, with a Prominent to Strong shift of 80–90%—a level that places them among the finest available globally. Their clarity is exceptional, and their cut symmetry makes them ideal for bespoke high jewelry or as a long-term gemstone investment. Matched Alexandrite pairs of this quality are vanishingly rare. To find one of Tanzanian origin, approaching 7 carats total, with this level of optical harmony and pedigree, is truly exceptional. This pair is not just rare—it’s poetic. Two stones, found years apart, now forever aligned.

A true Padparadscha must be certified as “Padparadscha” Sapphire by a lab. Not all labs are reliable for such responsibility. We will never self-certify a sapphire as Padparadscha. We pride ourselves on using reliable third party independent labs like GIA, and AGL for most of our gems. These labs follow the latest testing methods, like color stability testing, to confirm that gems are actually “Padparadscha.” We recommend watching this video, to learn more, check out our Padparadscha guide.
I found The Rare Gem doing hours of research on the perfect gem for my engagement ring and decided on Alexandrite for its beauty and unique color changing qualities. It was important for us to buy from a reliable and trustworthy source and The Rare Gem was just that.
Loved the alexandrite ring I got from the rare gem. It looked even better in person than on the website. I had a lot of difficulty finding a jeweler that had alexandrite and I was very happy with the selection that Justin had.
If you're in the market for an exceptional heirloom quality piece of jewelry - Justin and his team have you covered. Incredibly satisfied with the final results, and hopefully the first of many pieces for my fiancée-to-be
Great friendly service. They were very accommodating with my scheduling constraints. They were very knowledgeable and took their time with me. They were genuinely interested in my satisfaction. Their website provides a great education on Alexandrite.
I had an amazing experience working with Justin and his team. I'm so glad I found the Rare Gem, because I was having a hard time sourcing a quality Russian stone prior. The whole process was a breeze. Justin was extremely knowledgeable and responsive and offered several options.
